Sight Words/Tricky Words

*Sight words/tricky words – remember these words are not sounded out, the first letter sound can help when trying to recall the word but do not try to blend the sounds.

Remember:   Junior infants only learn blue list,  Senior Infants learn yellow and red,  1st class learn green, pink and brown lists.  Children in higher classes would be encouraged to practise and revise all words.
Sample Sight Vocabulary/Tricky Word Activities:
  1. Write out sounds/tricky words on card to make flashcards, make 2 sets.
  2. Play snap with flashcards
  3. Play a matching or memory game with the 2 sets of sounds/tricky words flashcards
  4. Have a sounds/tricky word hunt – find a given word in a book, how many times can you find it?
  5. Play bingo by drawing a grid and writing out some of the sounds/tricky words on the grid, call out words and mark off words by colouring them.
  6. Put sounds/tricky word flashcards on the floor, toss a teddy/soft toy on the word you call out. If it’s a nice day, write them with chalk on the footpath and toss a pebble to correct sound/word.
  7. Put sound/tricky word flashcards on the floor hop to the next card when read correctly
  8. Play 4-in-a-row. (like connect 4 game but on paper). Draw a 6x6 grid. Write in sounds or tricky words, doesn’t matter if you have to repeat words, then take turns trying to get four in a row, saying the chosen sound/tricky word.
  9. Stick the words on a dice,  roll and make a sentence with the word

We appreciate that people may not have access to printers but we have included a link to a template for a roll and read game.

there’s also a link to a snakes and ladder game.
