Senior Infants 2019/2020

Structured Play for September

Our themes were 'home' and 'Autumn' and were carried through in our free play station of 'Home' and our fine motor station where the children developed their cutting and pasting skills cutting out pictures of houses and sticking them together. In playdough they were encouraged to create things they might eat at home! For Art we created lots of Autumn themed Art such as Autumn leaf rubbings and Autumn leaves falling from trees - for this we explored textures created by using cotton buds in paint.
Home station ready to go!

Happy Halloween from Senior Infants!

December 2019

During December we've been busy with the theme of the Post Office especially the North Pole Post Office. We have written and posted our letters to Santa. Weighed and stamped parcels and filled out forms. In the playdough station we made Christmas decorations and other delights. In the small world area we helped Santa's elves clear a path through the snow (rice and cotton wool maze) with his snowploughs. We have also had a special addition to our classroom who we helped name - we all wrote our name choice on the whiteboard and in the morning our elf had chosen the name from our selection - Billy Beans the Elf! He enjoys keeping an eye on us all and getting up to some mischief too!

January 2020 - We have been busy!

St. Brigid's Day

We explored St. Brigid's Day and the story of how she laid her cloak out on the ground so she could claim the land for her church from the king. Charlie's Mum made a St. Brigid's Cross for everyone! Thank You!!

Science

We explored the topic of electricity in the home. We looked at how to be safe around electricity and then we went on to explore where electricity comes from with a focus on Renewable Energy. We talked about where our own bodies get energy from too! With the large windfarm in Belacorrick we took focus on Windpower and made our own little windfarm - also looking at videos on how wind energy is made.

Structured Play January and February - Construction

February 2020 - Spring is here!

Pancake Tuesday!

We had great fun discussing what ingredients go into making pancakes and how the batter changes with heat on the pan.  We also hotly debated the best toppings! We sequenced the stages of pancake making in Maths and we even read a silly story about a runaway pancake for English.  Best of all of course was the tasting!! Thank you to Caoimhe who helped by making some delicious pancakes to sample!

Engineer's Week 2020

In Senior Infants we engaged with lots of fun activities for Engineers week.  We designed Lego vehicles that you could push and pull.  We learned lots about renewable energies and concentrated our learning on Windfarms. We even made our own wind Turbine - finding out how it makes wind turn into electricty! We had fun with experiments too with slime making and creating exploding colours using vinegar, food colouring and bread soda.

What have we been getting up to?

Here are a few snapshots of Senior Infants having fun at home - learning and playing all at once! Well done guys!
Baking, creating beautiful artwork, building, painting, farming, making music from household items, creating money and selling things in your own shop as well. You have been busy!

Virtual Sports Day 2020!!!

Well done everyone for taking part in Virtual Sports Day.  Here is the evidence of what great fun was had! I'm a little jealous - I do love the Egg and Spoon Race and the Sack Race too!!!
Here are some pictures of Senior Infants having fun with their day.

  • Great News! The Crossmolina Library has reopened, so if you would like to take out some books you can now call Maureen on (096) 31939.

  • There are some suggestions below for writing activities that you could do with your children over the Summer.  It is only a suggestion.  Also it may be a lot easier to make a Summer Journal from a copybook and that is fine.  The template included below will give you some ideas as to how it might look.

Wellbeing for kids

Here is a link to part of the Weaving Wellbeing Programme that is free to parents at the moment.  The other books in the series have to be purchased but may well be worth a look if you feel it will benefit your child. Also mindfulness matters by Derval Dunford is an excellent resource.  These may be helpful for your child in dealing with coming back to school and I'm sure that coming closer to the time to return more publications will become available.
