WALK TO SCHOOL
WEEK 11-15 MAY Just a reminder that
this week is National Walk to School Week. It’s a very big week for
Green-Schools and we would like if everyone could become involved. Wednesday
13th May is National WOW and we
are hoping to join the other 20,000 pupils walking to school that
day.
Green Schools Information:
Crossmolina NS is a 179 pupil mixed school in Crossmolina, Co. Mayo. The school is working towards their fourth Green Flag on travel and hopes to collect it’s Green Flag this May. Crossmolina NS is a very active and sporty school and was delighted to be moving on to the travel theme in September 2013. The focus in the first year was to reduce the numbers of cars coming to school by increasing walking, park n’stride and carpooling. Using the Green Tree, the Golden Boot, posters and a great community spirit the numbers of cars outside the school gate reduced dramatically making the approach to school safer for the pupils. With the success of walking and Park n’Stride and the eagerness of the pupils to cycle it was decided that 2014/2015 was the year to promote cycling. Helmet Check, Safety, Dr. Bike, Climate Change and type of bike workshops were held in the lead up to Christmas and with the Cycle Skills workshop scheduled for after Christmas it was agreed the Big Travel Challenge was the perfect time to promote and encourage cycling to school. The Green-schools committee spread the word in their classes, posters and slogans were made, notes were sent home to parents and the Green Tree was brought back into action and for the month of February Crossmolina cycled to school! Nothing deterred the pupils during the month, parents and pupils of all ages cycled rain, hail, wind or snow and there was plenty of snow! Cycling was a challenge at the beginning but the enjoyment, the buzz, the sense of community, teamwork and improving the environment and the locality are the reasons it became a success that whole school was part of.
Traffic and road safety have been an issue outside Crossmolina NS for years so when we moved onto the Green-Schools travel theme we hoped that it might help solve the problem and two years on we are absolutely delighted with the outcome. Not only has the program helped solve our traffic issues but there’s a great buzz and atmosphere in school. Pupils, parents and staff that walk or cycle to school are in great form in the mornings and there’s a sense of pride that comes with that. The pupils are proud that they are improving the environment and helping make Crossmolina a better place and most of all enjoying themselves while doing so. There is now a new footpath in Crossmolina, a new pedestrian crossing is being put in place and drivers are a lot more aware and better behaved when driving through the town as they know there are pupils walking and cycling to school and we have now won the cycling category in the Big Travel Challenge which we are absolutely delighted with. However, none of this would be possible without the support of Green-Schools travel and the regular visits, updates, workshops and resources provided to our school. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Green-Schools for providing such a wonderful program that has helped improve our entire community.
