Paralympics

We worked in groups on projects about the Paralympics. We choose our own topics and presented them to our classmates who really enjoyed them. We learned how to use PowerPoint and are loving it!

Mayo for Sam 2016!

We were very excited on Mayo Day! We wore our jerseys and cheered Mayo on. We had a 'Design a Jersey' competition in our classroom which was judged by Aidan O'Shea. We then went out to practise for Cross Country with Mrs Forde.

Our Blog

Throughout the month of October, we worked very hard on our blog. In pairs we choose a county to study. We searched for information about this county and enjoyed creating our own blogposts. We learned how to add photos, links and different word formats to our blog. Each pair presented their blogpost to the class from our internet page! We would love if you would check out our work from the link below. Leave a comment to let us know what you think.

The Magical Christmas Jigsaw

Fourth and Fifth class worked very hard on our class play 'The Magical Christmas Jigsaw'. We painted our own set, decorated and gathered our props, and sang and danced our hearts out.

4th Class Trip to the Céide Fields and Ballinglen Arts Centre

We left at half 9 to go to Ballycastle. The boys went to Céide Fields and the girls went to the Ballinglen Arts Centre. The boys saw a 5000 year old pine tree. One side was rotted and the other one was preserved  because it was in the bog. After we saw that we went outside to see the walls made in the Stone Age. We walked around a field and saw the walls. There was a great view of the sea and Dún Bríste. Then we went back inside and saw pottery and saw how they made flour with seeds. After that, we went upstairs and looked out the window at the fields. The girls went to the art centre and did ink printing, then they went upstairs and met an artist called Margo. She told them about her pictures. Most of her pictures are of hares .When the boys went we did the ink printing too and met a man called Ed Miliano. We loved his work, which you can see at http://www.edmiliano.com/  He liked painting gardens. One year he painted 366 pictures. One of his garden every day of the year. He painted a picture of a shop outside the window and it looked exactly like it. The shop was called Polkes. He did it from 2 angles, 1 downstairs and 1 upstairs. For the ink printing we had to bring a picture of something in our community, then etch it out on a piece of plastic. Then we put on aprons and picked the colour ink we wanted and we rolled it on to the plastic. After that we scraped some of the ink off so it only went in the lines we etched out. Then we went to the printer and we had to spin a wheel. All our pictures came out great! When we were finished we went down to a room with lots of paintings. It was called the gallery. It showed the name of the artist, the title and what year they were painted in. We got back on the bus after that and met the girls and we were back at school at twenty to three.

Italy

Over the past few weeks we have been learning about Italy. Some of the things we learned about were Pompeii, The Renaissance, The Colleaseum, Romans, Italian food and artists including Leonardo De Vinci and Michelangelo. We even stuck a piece of paper under the table and pretended to design the roof of the Sistine Chapel that Michelangelo painted while on his back for four years. We worked in groups to create projects on Italy and presented them to our class. Each group talked about a different topic. The topics were: Sports, Cars, Pompeii, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Vatican City and Rome.
On Friday the 17th of February we had Italy day, where we made pizza and ice cream from scratch! We had a challenge to see who could make the highest leaning tower of Pisa out of paper and sellotape. It had to stay standing for five seconds. We learned about Pompeii when mount Vesuvius erupted. There was a massive ash cloud above Pompeii . When people were excavating, they found animals and in the bakery the ovens hadn't  collapsed because they were arched. Did you know about how pizza was invented? They used the dough as plates for the people in the bakery. They did  not waste the dough. Then the people ate it. They also used it for the poor people in Italy. One day Queen Marguerite  visited some poor people and she tried the dough and ordered her servants to make it for her and that is why cheese pizza is called marguerieta.
A couple of weeks ago there was an avalanche in the Alps, a ski resort and hotel that was three storeys high was buried in the snow. You could only see the third storey, the other two storeys were covered in snow. Two people were out in their car and they saw it coming. Italy won the World Cup 4 times. Their captain is called Gianluigi Buffon. In Euro 2016 they got to the quarter final and lost in penalties to Germany. In their group they had Belgium, Ireland and Sweden. They beat Belgium and Sweden but obviously  they could not beat Ireland and lost 1-0. Robbie Brady scored a header and was assisted by Wesley Hoolahan. Some cars that are Italian are Ferrari, Lambourghini, Fiat , Alfa Romeo, Lancia (but they do not make them anymore) and Mazerati if you have one of these apart from the Fiat you are rich.

Fairtrade Fortnight 27th
February - 12th March

We have been learning all about fair trade.
We found the conditions people work in and the pay they receive quite shocking.
If a banana cost 30c, the banana farm worker would get 1c while the shopkeeper would get 13c, with the rest of the money going to the shipper and plantation owner.
It just isn't fair!

"Fair trade is a social movement whose stated goal is to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions and to promote sustainable farming."
Here is the symbol. Look out for this symbol on products you buy.
A product with the fair trade symbol means the worker is getting a fair deal, their communities are being developed and they are working in safer conditions.

Magnet Games

After our work and experiments with magnets, we divided into groups and started planning our own magnet games. Each group came up with a plan, gathered their materials and got to work.
Once we were happy with our constructions, we wrote up a list of instructions to go along with our game. These are our finished games, all played using magnets. We were very proud of our work!
Now the fun part! Everyone went around the classroom playing with the games. Have a look at some of the games in action. Coming soon to a toy shop near you!
