I hope you all enjoy your first week with no formal school work and find some time to relax and do the things you enjoy!  If you have a little bit of free time this week or next week, you might like to take part in a little project-  'Postcards from around the World'.
Below you will find all the information you need to take part and I have also added a list of virtual tours for you to try out.

Postcards from around the World

Picture
Sonas Nursing Home Riverview Ballina have launched a lovely new project 'Postcards from around the World'.

They are asking everyone, wherever they are in the world, to send a postcard to the residents. The goal is to collect as many as they can from around Ireland and the world.  It might be a nice activity to get involved in and to be the reason someone smiles.
Please send cards to:

Capacity
  • The capacity of a container is the amount of liquid it can hold.
  • We can measure capacity using non-standard units and standard units.
  • Non-standard units can be anything like using a mug/ spoon/ saucepan/ egg cup, etc.  You would choose what non-standard unit of measurement and then use it to fill a bigger container such as a basin/bucket/bath.
    • Example- how many mugs of water will it take to fill a saucepan.
  • Standard units of measurement are litres (l) and millilitres (ml).
  • There are 1000ml in 1 litre.  1000ml = 1l
  • We would use millilitres to measure smaller containers and litres and millilitres to measure larger containers.

Sequences and Number Sentences
  • Look at the patterns on page 148.
  • On question 1 say the patterns out loud and continue the pattern 2 or 3 more times.
  • Can you say what the core of the pattern is? The core is the little section (the first part of the pattern before its repeated) at the beginning and that little section is repeated over and over again.
    • Example- on part b in question one the pattern goes:
Red, yellow, blue, Red, yellow, blue, Red, yellow…
  • To continue the pattern it would be: blue, Red, yellow, blue, Red, yellow, blue
  • What is the core of this pattern? I will need to look at the start of the pattern and say what colours are there before they start again.
I can see in the pattern I have red, yellow and blue and then it starts at red again. So the core is red, yellow and blue.
  • Look at question 3 a-c and identify the core in each.
  • Complete question 1 a-d on page 149.
    • When you have complete the next parts to a sequence of numbers you need to find what the difference between each number is.  When you know the difference- you can add that onto the last number in the sequence.
  • Complete question 3 a-c and 4 a-c on page 150.

Gaeilge
Bua na Cainte
  • Complete lth 143.
    • Top part- fill in the blanks (using the penguin to help)
    • Middle part- filling in the gach lá and amárach.  Remember there is no ‘h’ in gach lá and amárach. Choose your ending by looking at the last vowel in the word. Leathan le leathan (a, o, u = ann)  and caol le caol (i, e = eann)
    • Bottom part- using the middle part to help fill in the gach lá and amárach.
Thursday:
PE
  • North West Fitness Academy are doing live workouts on their Facebook page (North West Fitness Academy).
  • Anything active that you enjoy!

English
Jolly Phonics Grammar Book
  • Complete page 71 on The Subject and Object of a Sentence
  • You have 3 jobs to do here.
  1. Underline the verb in red (or any colour). Remember the verb is a doing word- so ask yourself what are they doing in the sentence
  2. Find the subject and put a box around it with a small ‘s’ in the corner. Remember that every sentence must have a subject. The subject of a sentence is the person, place or thing that is doing or being what the verb describes.
  3. Find the object and put a circle around it with a small ‘o’ inside.  Every sentence must also have an object. Both the subject and object can be a person, place or thing.
E.g. The farmer grows vegetables in the garden.
  • Remember the subject is ‘farmer’  and the farmer is growing (that is what he is doing). Now ask yourself ‘What is he growing?  He is growing vegetables so vegetables is the object.

Our second challenge of the week was to build a marble maze.  The children got to decide whether they wanted to complete this challenge individually or in pairs.  They used lots of different materials to build walls inside the maze!

World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day in our school everyone was encouraged to dress up as a character from a book.  This was the first year our school has participated like this and the children really made a HUGE effort with their costumes!! We had a guest Author in the morning and we got to hear two chapters of his new book.
